1940s Wedding Dress Lace Peplum Elusion Yoke Sleeves Chapel Train Sz 6 #1022Description
An iconic 1940s satin, lace and chiffon wedding dress with multi layered wide lace peplum that begins as a narrow band of lace at the front waist of the dress and then widens as it sweeps around the hips and down the back to gracious overlapping points. The fabric appears to be rayon, but there is no label and the colour is ivory. The tightly fitted, lined bodice comes to a point at the center front and back and has padded shoulders, a darted fit, long sheer sleeves that open with tiny covered buttons at the wrist, and a sheer top with a rounded neckline and the same tiny covered buttons down the back. There is a wide lace collar all around the dress which has an off the shoulder look because of the sheer bodice yoke and sleeves, and it has a 40s a side metal zipper. The skirt is nicely gathered at the waist, full at the hem, lined with satin, and the chiffon over skirt falls into a long chapel train at the back. There are tulle edges on the hem of the dress, including the train. But the defining feature of this lovely 1940s gown is the double layered, fully gathered, soft lace peplum. The floral lace is soft and has beautiful drape, and the peplum, balanced by the wide matching lace collar is very flattering and accentuates the waist. The approximate measurements of the dress and veil are as follows:
bust (pit to pit) 34"
waist 24"
hips 34"
shoulder to hem front 55" back 91"
sleeve inseam 17"
cuff 5.5" around
upper arms 10" around
shoulder to shoulder across the back 13"
train length 36" past the hem length
These measurements are approximately equivalent to a modern US size 6. There is no give to the fabric, and the dress is snug on my size 6 model.
The dress appears to be professionally made, but there is no label. There are no major condition issues with the dress , but this is a vintage wedding set that is at least 75 years old, and there may be some minor signs of age related wear, like tiny picks in the chiffon or broken brides in the lace, but I did not find any. I did notice that there are a few very faint and small spots here and there on the dress - you have to look to find them. The dress appears to be clean and fresh, but I did not launder it as I do not have a reputable cleaner in my rural area. I am confident that the dress would be as good as new after a trip to the dry cleaner. Structurally the dress is sound, the fabric strong and soft, not brittle, and overall clean, including the train. I found about an inch of seam coming undone on the right sleeve next to the buttons - an easy fix. I found 3 tiny pinhead size holes in the train, but I could have missed others as they were very tiny and hard to find. I could find no holes in the lace, but there is a lot of gathered lace and I may have missed some tiny ones. Amazingly well preserved for a 75 year old gown! Very wearable and very 1940's This is NOT a reproduction, this is an incredible, original, elegant 1940s iconic peplum wedding dress in satin, lace and chiffon, only from Antiquarius Antiques. Important information on vintage sizing
The sizing of vintage clothing can be very different from modern sizes. An item of clothing manufactured 100 years ago was for body shapes different from our own. Although we quote to the nearest
aproximate
equivalent US size, we recommend that you review all the detailed measurements provided closely. If you are not sure if a good fit, please ask us before you purchase.
Please be aware that vintage clothing is neither new nor perfect. In many cases, vintage clothing has been worn and is no longer new, and that is why it is such a good bargain. Excellent antique or vintage condition rarely means new - do not expect new or perfect as there will almost always be some signs of wear, especially with older items. Sometimes we sell newer vintage items that are new old stock (NOS) so they have never been worn and can be in such excellent condition that there are no signs of wear. But some of the garments we sell are 75 years old or more, and even if they were never worn, the fabric may show signs of wear just from being stored all those years. Please assume that older vintage and antique items may have a little dust and/or a few age spots, unless we have specifically stated that we have recently laundered the item. Nevertheless, vintage is a great way to dress extravagantly without having an extravagant budget. You can often find extraordinary examples of antique, vintage or designer items that are wearable textile art and will make you look like a million bucks!
